5 Tips for Perfecting Your Blog Content Strategy

I get it, blogging might feel like an outdated tactic from the golden age of Pinterest recipes and mommy blogs (both of which are great, OK), but hear me out: it’s still one of the most powerful ways to build trust, visibility, and authority in your industry.

The key? Creating and sticking to a blog content plan with you-approved strategy – not just vibes and good intentions.

Here’s the quick truth of it all:

  • One blog post done well can bring in dream clients for years.

  • A well-structured content strategy can fuel your SEO, sales, and brand voice all at once.

  • And if you’re flying by the seat of your pants every time you open Google Docs? You’re wasting your time (and probably losing steam).

Let’s walk through 5 simple (but HELPFUL) tips to create a blog content plan that actually works — not just for search engines, but for the real people you’re trying to reach.

Whether you're DIY-ing your way to visibility or handing it all off to a pro, you’ll walk away with actionable steps to make blogging easier, faster, and actually effective.

Do I Need a Blog Content Strategy for My Business?

The short answer? You do – and here’s why.

Blogging isn’t just an SEO strategy; it’s a direct line to the people you want to connect with most. The truth is that blogging isn’t an outdated, mid-2000s fad. It’s a consistent, reliable way to reach out directly to your dream people, show them what you know, change their lives, and keep them coming back for more.

That kind of marketing? It’s invaluable.

Here’s what a consistent, optimized, and compelling blog content strategy can do for you and your business:

Encourage & Entice Your People to Come Back for More

Why it matters: Our brains are wired to seek patterns and familiarity. When you publish valuable blogs consistently, you tap into the Mere Exposure Effect — a cognitive bias where people develop a preference for things simply because they’re familiar. Add value to the mix, and you’re not just familiar — you’re trusted. Regular, helpful content gives your readers a dopamine hit of insight or clarity, which trains their brain to associate your brand with that positive reward… so they keep coming back for more.

Positions You as THE Pro on This Stuff

Why it matters: That kind of credibility can take a long time to build. But your brain loves shortcuts — especially when making decisions. This is the Authority Principle at work (from Cialdini’s famous persuasion triggers). When you show up consistently with content that educates, clarifies, or re-frames, your audience doesn’t just see you as smart – they start to see you as the go-to. And in a sea of noise, the go-to gets hired. Authority also builds cognitive ease — when your audience sees your name, their brain says, “I know this one,  let’s trust ‘em.”

Makes You Memorable (& Hirable)

Why it matters: Imagine how powerful it is to be top of mind for your industry. Your blog can do that. We remember stories and emotions, not sales pitches. When your blogs are thoughtful, educational, or entertaining, you activate the brain’s hippocampus (the memory center), especially if you’re sparking visual, emotional, or storytelling elements. Add in semantic encoding (fancy brain talk for giving your audience something meaningful to tie your message to), and BOOM – your brand lives rent-free in their minds. And when they need what you offer? You’re already top of mind.

Change the Way They Think About Something

Why it matters: If you can give your people that a-ha lightbulb moment, you’ve got them.  We’re all walking around with mental models – shortcuts for how we think the world works. But when someone shows us a new way to see something (hello, your blog), it triggers cognitive dissonance – the brain’s discomfort when holding two conflicting ideas. If your post offers a better, clearer, or more aligned perspective, your reader’s brain will shift to accommodate it (neuroplasticity, baby). That moment of transformation? It’s what builds deep trust, and turns casual lurkers into devoted fans.

5 Tips for Creating a Blog Content Strategy

Creating the Blog Content Plan is Half the Battle

Willy nilly blogging is for silly geese – at least, that’s what I think. And after 9 years (sheesh, almost a decade!) of blogging for other business owners for a living, I stand by that take fiercely.

Blogging consistently is hard, but it’s much harder if you don’t have a plan for yourself. It’s just like anything else – social media, newsletters to your list, launch plans. If you don’t create a plan for future you, you’ll likely get stuck in the execution phase over and over.

The result? You end up planning and not writing on repeat. So, nothing gets done.

Having your blog topics mapped out can help you plan better launches, provide more consistent value for your people, and keep you on track with updating your resources (something your dream clients & the search engines love to see).

→ Need help mapping out your blog content plan? That’s why I created Blog Wrangler. This all-in-one blog content strategy + scheduler gives you 60+ blogging topics and prompts to get you goin’ (plus a ton of SEO help).

That’s more than a year’s worth of weekly blog posts mapped out for you.

Make It Easy – Create a Structure & Templatize Your Blogs

The issue I see most often with blogging is that business owners try to reinvent the wheel every single time they post. They create an all-new structure, have a convoluted process, and essentially throw spaghetti at the wall, hoping something sticks.

That usually ends up eating up precious hours – hours you could be doing something else. Then, you end up resenting your blogging efforts – that usually keeps you from blogging. Until you get frustrated and realize you should blog. Then the whole process repeats.

See the issue here?

In reality, all you need to do is create a structure that works for you and then templatize your blogging process.

Set yourself up with a system, checklists, and a blog outline template that makes blogging easy and fast.

Blog Batching Could Be Your BFF

Batching doesn’t work for everyone, but if you like to hyperfocus and knock a few things off your schedule (like I do), blog batching could be the key to your blog content strategy.

Instead of setting aside precious time each week to write one post, I like to take a day or two every month and dedicate that time specifically to writing blogs for the month. If I’m lucky, I’ll get ahead by a month or two.

Does that always happen? No. But when I can get myself to that schedule, the blogging consistency is unmatched.

I tell you this as I write this blog … and four others at the same time. It’s true, I wrote two blogs before this one, and I’ll write another after it – all in one day.

And of course, batching can look like whatever you want it to. You don’t have to sit down and hammer out four entire posts (with Blog Wrangler you could, though!). As long as you’re doing what’s consistent and manageable for you, that’s the best blog content strategy.

Be Consistent – Whatever That Looks Like for You

Some business owners write off blogging if they can’t churn out a post a week. But you know what’s always true? Something is better than nothing. One (value-packed, intentional, SEO-optimized) post per month is a million times better than just…not blogging.

The best thing you can do for yourself (and for your people) is to set a schedule that actually works for you and stick to it. Maybe that’s one post a week, maybe that’s one post a month – set yourself up for success with a schedule that helps you provide real value and insight for your site lurkers and lovers.

Blog Should Be Actually Valuable for Your People (Not Just Words on a Page)

Your blogs are not here to appease the SEO gods (at least, not entirely). We know the whole “content is king” mantra matters – but does it matter more than actually providing help and insight for your people?

It’s easy to get in the mindset of writing out info (or ChatGPTing stuff, I see you) and posting it just to check the SEO box.

But truthfully, if you’re just throwing nonsense up, I hope you expect nonsense in return. Like most things in life, intentionality matters. Creating valuable, actionable, helpful blog content should be the foundation of your blog content strategy.

No, not every blog you write and post has to be worthy of a Pulitzer, but each should allow you to answer YES to these questions:

  • Can my people take something transformative or helpful from this?

  • Did I put effort, energy, thought, and intention into this?

  • Is this something my ideal person actively cares about or should care about?

If you can answer yes to these three questions, you’re in a good spot.
